The latter is an indication of a worn-out spring that is about to break and cause damage to the open-close door mechanism. We fixed the problem by securing the door on a ladder, preventing it from moving while we replaced the old spring with a new one of the right size. Then we put the garage door back in place and tested that it worked properly again.
